John Bagterp Jørgensen is a Professor in Model-based Control in DTU compute, a faculty member at the DTU Center for Energy Resources Engineering (CERE) and a cofounder of 2-control ApS which is specialized in model predictive control technologies. His research focuses on computation and application of Model Predictive Control(MPC), including industrial processes, intelligent control of smart energy systems, production optimization and so on. His research is to a large extent conducted in collaboration with industrial companies. Prof. Jørgensen has hosted more than 20 research projects funded by the Danish Agency for Science, Technology and Innovation, Research Council, Diabetes Academy and others. He has published over 200 papers and supervised more than 40 PhD students. As a teacher, he teaches graduate courses on numerical methods for optimization, differential equations, and model predictive control.

We provide an overview of numerical methods for differential equations. We discuss the solution of differential equation models that can be ordinary differential equations, differential algebraic equations, partial differential equations, and partial differential algebraic equations. We also discuss the solution of the corresponding stochastic differential equations. We discuss sensitivity computation that are relevant when the differential equation model is used as part of optimization procedures in parameter estimation, optimal control, and model predictive control. Finally, we compare programming languages such as Matlab, Python, Julia, and C/C++.
